The Holidays and Wellness Go Hand in Hand

Cookies, presents and Christmas trees — those are the things you think of when you think of the holidays. What with all the other items on your to-do list at this time of year, getting an adjustment may not even cross your mind. But it should — because here at Crist Chiropractic & Wellness, we believe that chiropractic care and wellness can be an integral part of the holiday season.

Chiropractic Care Is a Holiday Gift to Yourself

No matter how much you love the holidays, they can be a stressful time of year. The holidays are a time to spend with loved ones, but many of us fight and bicker with those loved ones despite our best intentions. Other sources of holiday stress that can affect your wellness include cleaning, cooking, shopping and financial woes as you struggle to find a way to pay for this expensive time of year.

But mental stress is not the only kind of stress we face during the holidays. Seasonal obligations take a toll on our bodies, too. Most people are far more active during the months leading up to Christmas than they are throughout the rest of the year. Shopping, decorating, cooking and cleaning do not sound like strenuous athletic activities, but they can nevertheless wear down your physical endurance and cause muscle tension and injury.

Some common causes of holiday muscle tension, injuries and vertebral subluxations include:

  • Carrying boxes, parcels and bags around a shopping mall
  • Standing for hours on end as you search for gifts in crowded shopping centers
  • Hanging lights and decorating, outside or in
  • Shoveling snow
  • Cutting, transporting and erecting Christmas trees
  • Carrying luggage and walking through airports
  • Sleeping on sofa beds or air mattresses
  • Sitting for hours in airplanes or cars

All of these activities can leave you stiff, sore and tense, and can even cause you to experience back injuries or muscle spasms. If you are going shopping, the American Chiropractic Association has some recommendations to make the experience as (literally) pain-free as possible and improve your wellness:

  • Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated or sugary beverages
  • Take frequent breaks, making sure to stretch
  • Carry as little as possible — put bags and parcels in your car and carry only what you need for the day in a small backpack

As the holidays approach, you may want to schedule extra chiropractic adjustments with our doctors here at Crist Chiropractic & Wellness. Adjustments relieve muscle tension and boost immunity, to help you cope with holiday stress and protect you from the colds and flus that so often go around at this time of year.

It is especially important to see our doctors before and after holiday travel. If you take a fall or are involved in an accident at any point during your holiday preparations, call our clinic — serious symptoms may not appear for days, and you could unknowingly worsen your injuries in the meantime. Let our chiropractors take the stress out of your holidays.
