As you probably know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the main focus seems to be finding a cure for this terrible disease. This is a noble pursuit, but at Crist Chiropractic and Wellness, we believe that preventing cancer is just as—if not more—important. After all, the best defense against cancer is never to get it, right?

Did you know that your body creates hundreds or even thousands of cancer cells every single day? Without conscious thought, your body’s natural immune system seeks out and destroys these cancerous cells before they’re able to cause any damage.

Able to heal itself naturally, your body is a cancer-killing machine. However, when your immune system is compromised by an overload of carcinogens, poor nerve supply, lackluster diet and inconsistent exercise, your body simply can’t hold back the constantly multiplying cancer cells. Cancer typically breeds in the body for years—or even decades—before being detected and diagnosed.

10 Foods that Kill Cancer

BROCCOLI: One of the best cancer-fighting foods on the planet, it’s loaded with various substances that fight or inhibit a wide range of cancers including Breast, Prostate, Skin, Colon and Rectal Cancers. Tip: Sulforaphane, which assists the body in metabolizing hormones, directly inhibits cancer cell proliferation and is found in up to 1,000 times greater concentration in the sprouts of the Broccoli versus the mature plant.

DARK, LEAFY GREENS: Dark leafy greens are a nutritional powerhouse of vitamins and minerals that should be a regular part of everyone’s diet. Greens like Collards, Escarole, Kale, Mustard Greens, Romaine Lettuce, and Swiss Chard are high in Carotenoids and Antioxidants, which inhibit the growth of certain types of breast cancer cells. Greens are also high in Phytochemicals, which boost enzymes that detoxify carcinogens and help repair DNA damage to cells which can develop into cancer if left unchecked.

ORGANIC ANIMAL PRODUCTS: (Wild-caught fish, grass-fed beef, pasture raised poultry and eggs): Fish has high levels of Omega 3 Fatty Acids and high levels of Vitamin D, which is a big player in breast cancer prevention. Grass-fed beef and organic butter have very high levels of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) which is known to be a powerful cancer fighting agent. Studies have shown that when human breast cancer cells were incubated in high CLA milk fat, the growth of the cancer cells decreased by 90 percent. A French study also showed that women with the highest CLA levels had a 74 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer.

CURCUMIN: This power-packed spice found in Curry Powder and Turmeric contains compounds that protect against breast cancer and tumor growth. Tip: Simply add it to soups, spreads, smoothies, salads, etc.

CARROTS: High in Beta Carotene, carrots fight many forms of cancer including Lung, Stomach, Intestinal, Bladder, Prostate, Breast, Throat and Mouth. Tip: It’s better to eat them raw rather than cooked and in moderation due to high sugar content.

TOMATOES: It’s one of the anti-cancer super foods that contains Lycopene, and is high in Antioxidants that attack cancer-triggering free radicals in the body. Lycopene is known to kill Mouth Cancer cells and is linked to reduced risk of Breast, Prostate, Pancreas and Colorectal Cancers. Tip: It is actually more effective when cooked.

AVOCADOS: They are high in Antioxidants. It is now believed that they may be useful in treating Viral Hepatitis, which causes Liver Cancer, as well as other types of Liver damage.

CITRUS FRUITS: Including Grapefruit, Oranges, and Lemons, help to remove carcinogens from the body, preventing various cancers. They may also stimulate cancer-killing immune cells. They are high in Vitamin C and Beta Carotene.

BERRIES: Strawberries, Raspberries and Blueberries have been shown to help prevent cancers of the Skin, Bladder, Lung and Breast, largely because of their Ellagic Acid content. All are high in Antioxidants, but the Anthocyanosides in Blueberries are the most powerful known in science.

NUTS: They are high in Antioxidants. Brazil nuts in particular help against Prostate Cancer because they contain a highly bioavailable and therapeutic form of Selenium.
