What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints that include neck pain, back pain, joint pain of the arms or legs, and headaches. The goal of chiropractic is to optimize health with a non-invasive approach that does not use drugs or surgery. Chiropractic primary avenue of care is spinal manipulation and manipulation of the framework of the body.

How Does Chiropractic Actually Work?
Chiropractors perform spinal manipulations, which are also known as adjustments. This is a very common therapeutic procedure that restore joint mobility. A chiropractic adjustment refers to a chiropractor applying manipulation to the vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally.
The typical method to combat pain (or symptoms) is to take a painkiller. This may make some of the pain diminish but does very little to remove the true source of the pain. The symptoms our body gives us are not actually the problem; they are very important warning indicators. Therefore, as opposed to popping muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories or pain relievers, it is important to remove the source of our pain and not just mask the symptoms. Besides the fact that anything medicinal has side-effects (many of which are not immediately noticed), covering up symptoms and not actually addressing why the body is giving us these signals usually ends up making the condition much worse over time. This is because the real source of the pain was never fully addressed.
Chiropractors focus on pinpointing the source of your pain so that it can be properly removed and not just masked. Many times, the source of our pain has been built up over several months or years. Most people today spend long hours in a seated position, mostly in front of a computer screen or on the phone. Still, many of us travel several, if not hundreds of miles, per week in a car or on airplanes. These types of stagnant positions are extremely detrimental to our bodies. The human body “learns” these new positions via complex neurological signals. Our brains are sophisticated enough to accommodate our repetitive postures and movements. In doing so, however, our muscles begin to pull and tug on the bones that they are attached to. Eventually, those bones and joints shift, placing increased pressure on cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and eventually nerves.
So, how do adjustments fix this situation? By performing adjustments, we can teach the body to re-learn the proper physical structure that is required to maintain proper overall health. As the body gradually re-learns how to position itself, there is a decrease in pressure on the joint structures (including the discs of the vertebral column), chronically tight muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. As the pressure is removed from our bodies, inflammation is minimized and pain levels drop. Furthermore, our entire nervous system (i.e. nerves) can function more efficiently. Many patients realize changes in their lives such as sleep, the ability to handle stress, energy, and even digestive issues because of how much pressure is taken off of their spinal nerves.
Here is an analogy to make this whole concept much clearer. Imagine that you are in a room in your house that has a dimmer switch to control the lights in that room. If you set the dimmer consistently to its “halfway” point, then you would realize that, while you can still see enough to move freely about the room, your ability to function within that room would vastly improve if that dimmer switch was adjusted to its full power. Adjustments, then, are our way of cranking up the power on the dimmer switches of our body. Sure, you can function “ok” right now, but have you ever functioned with “full power” sent through your nerves? If you free your nervous system from stress and pressure, you will begin to regain the vitality in your life that you deserve.
